The Dig (Book Review)

When I first began reading the book, I thought it would be really difficult for me because, I had to keep going back and rereading parts of the book to understand. But as I progessed it got really easy. It was about astronaughts going up into space trying to stop the asroid from hitting but accidently get transferred and trapped in an alien word. They have to learn the in's and outs of this strange planet to try and survive and escape. What I really enjoyed about the book was how they had the 2 astronaughts and the journalist narrating, and then at parts the unseen alien life forms would talk and narrate the story. I think this book should have chosen to read in our english IV class this semeseter, I think everyone would have really gotten into the story. Using Freytags triangle this his how I mapped out the story. In the beggining the government finds out the asteroid is heading for earth, and they're not quite sure where it is going to hit. The astronaughts go up into space to try and and blow up the asteroid with a bomb. They attatch bomb and it explodes but instead of blowing up it starts to glow violently, which is the beginning of the complication. The astronaughts go inside of the asteroid, and mysteriously vanish to the alien planet with no ways of getting back to earth. When on the planet one of the astronaughts dies, but later on in the book is broughten back to life by a life crystal from Mr. Low. With this newly found information they begin to analyze the planet and realize that the planet offers more to them than they may realize. Time elapses and the crystal that brought back Mr. Brink begins to mess with his personality, which later on makes him die again. Him and his journalist partner Mrs. Robbins finally come close to finding out a way to go back home, and she dies trying to reconfigure "The Eye." But luckily Mr. Low finds a way to activate it and is able to set free the aliens that trapped in it for thousands of years. The aliens then in return bring back Mr. Brink and Mrs. Robbins back to life, and help them get back home safely for setting them free.

5- conflicts

When reading my book "The dig," I did find out that I did have a couple of conflicts involved in my book. One that popped out to me right away was man vs. supernatural. In my book an astroid his heading straight towards earth, and the government is trying to prevent it from happening. Mr. Low, Maggie (reporter), and a few other astronaughts go up into space to try to blow up the astroid or at least try to get as far away as they can. The bomb goes off and they all notice after that the astroid is still there, but they also notice a bright illuminous light coming from it. Low, Brink, and Maggie leave the ship to explore it, and to their amazement they find alien like scriptures inscribed in metal planks. Another conflict I notice in my book is Man vs. himself. Mr. Low to seems a little uptigt an more conservative in the beggining of the book. But as he watches and listens to the intrusive and quirky Maggie, he begins to reflect on himself and begins to mellow out. Maggie is an all over the place extraverted happy type person, so he has no choice but to open up. I not sure if I am going to use this last conflict term in the right sense, but the last conflict I notice is man vs. society. The group of astronaughts are trying to stop this astroid from what could eventually destroy parts of the earth all on their own. If they dont prevent it from hitting all of society could be in serious danger because they're not really sure where the astroid is going to hit, and how serious the damage will be.

Star Wars: Reaction

After, finishing watching the Star wars movie I'd have to say it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I guess I was reluctant in watching it in the first place because, I thought it was too long and very difficult to understand. I still think it is kind of difficult to understand but it was more interesting to watch than I thought it was. One question I had about the movie was at the end when Princess Leah and Luke were communicating without being near to each other. Can they communitcate psychically? Another question I found myself asking was, does Darth Vater have to stay evil or can decide to join to good side again? When watching the movie I kept being reminded of X-Men III The last stand. I think I was being reminded of X-men because movies use a lot of special effects. I wonder if it was really hard for George Lucas to incoroporate all of the different special effects in Star wars. I seen a lot of movies but none of them come close to the amount or quality of special effects put into them. My last question is, does Luke secretly deep down inside want to join his dad on the dark side? I say that because in the end he didn't really seem all that sure what he really wanted to do. Luke must have felt really dissapointed and shocked to find out that his own father was Darth Vater and that he wasnt dead. If it were me I would be dissapointed too, and I would try to convince him to join the good side.

Faith

With my book nothing really pops out at me dealing with faith. But when reading my book I think that it does sort of deal with faith. For example with the astroid that is heading straight for earth. Everybody is trying everything in their powers to try and stop it from hitting earth. Even though it is a long shot to try and stop this astroid, everyone wont give up hope to try and prevent this situation from occuring. I think that you have to have faith even when you think your out of luck, or you think that it is out of your hand. And that is exactly what the people are doing in my book currently they wont stop. Whether it be religious, or whatever your dealing with. You have to have faith.

The Star #2

Today when we were discussing the short story "The Star," we started noticing the true meaning of the story. Which lead us to different dilemmas. I remember in class when we started disccusing the point whether or not God existed based on the guys explanation of what happened to the civilation. I believe that God created the universe and let things happen as they would naturally happen. Just because he didnt stop the star from destroying the planet doesnt mean he doesnt exist. God isnt going to stop every little thing that happens in the world just because it is harmful to us. Otherwise all of the good people who have died innocently would have never died in the first place. Another dilemma that comes to mind based on the story is whether or not there is life on other planets. Our universe is extremely large, why wouldnt it be possible for other life to be living on them.

The Star (short story) 3/28/2007

Today we read the short story "The Star." For me it was kind of difficult to understand, I had to go back and reread the story again to try and understand the story. From what I understand a guy who is an astronomer is explaining an event in his head that happened some thousand of years ago, and as he does this he refers to his father "God." A star or supernova exploded so brightly that was able to be seen in the daylight, and the astronomer is trying to figure out what may have caused the big explosion. And when researching he finds a secret civilization's things left behind. He believes that they were preparing themselves for the explosion way ahead in advance. To me he becomes quite found and interested in them because he puts so much time and effort studying them. He keeps contemplating to himself why might father have done this. His colleagues come to an conclusion that God did it, but has no reason to explain himself. But he still doesnt except this an answer to the conclusion. He eventually figures out what happens, but still cant understand why God chose this one particular star out of all the stars in the universe.
